Nearly three years ago, our family began to consider, once again, the possibility of adopting more children. We adopted our now grown and married daughter nine years ago. And in March 2007, Steve and I, along with our three sons, determined that we wanted to open our homes and hearts to orphans in need of a loving home and God's grace. So, in the spring of 2007 we began our paperwork to adopt a child from China. A year later, in April of 2008 we filed to adopt a child from an African country.
Several weeks ago, we received the delightful news that we would have the joy of becoming parents to a beautiful, almost six year year old little girl (she's a Leap Day baby!) with a congenital heart defect. The decision to parent this child has not come without some trepidation. Her disorder gives her a greatly reduced life-expectancy. As parents it's nice to at least imagine that your children will outlive you, but that is not likely with this little blessing from God. However, after much prayer and soul-searching, we became convinced that God indeed desired for us to have our faith stretched in this way and for us to love as He commands. We can't wait to see what the Lord has in store for Hope Eilise ("Expectation with God") and for our family as she touches our hearts and lives.
Last Thursday, we got an exciting phone call from the liaison between our family and the orphanage in Africa that we've been working with. She announced that we'd been matched with a little boy that we'll name Caleb ("Whole-Hearted Devotion"). Caleb is a chubby cheeked baby with a sweet smile. We can hardly wait to meet him! Though we know he'll keep us on our toes, especially with the unexpected timing of bringing both Hope and Caleb home at nearly the same time (we'd originally anticipated the adoption dates to be close to two years apart) we are trusting that the Lord will strengthen us for the task of parenting these two precious souls while also parenting the hearts of our beloved biological sons.
Though there have been challenges during this three-year wait, the Lord has shown Himself faithful. He's particularly evidenced His care for us through the help of our dear family and friends who have supported us in prayer, encouragement, and financial sacrifice. Thank you to each who have played a part in getting us this far in the process. We can't wait to tell Hope and Caleb how you helped to bring them home!
